GATHER TOGETHER IN MY NAME- MAYA ANGELOU

Gather Together In My Name – Maya Angelou’s autobiography. VOLUME 2.

m_59_original_42909-480x300
Maya Angelou. God Bless Her Soul!

It is mesmerizing how this author would take you through a series of her American past as though it were your own.

I have to read, but I have to admit. Maya Angelou is, if not the best I have read. [That woman was the definition of Narration and talent.]

So I grabbed this book Wednesday Morning at 10AM and it kept me all but pinned down to my seat until I finished it at 2pm. There is an aura in her literature. The narratives are excellent, and I would be lying if I claimed to have words to describe it.

PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE BOOK DESCRIPTION BELOW

[Gather Together in My Name continues Maya Angelou’s personal story, begun so unforgettably in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The time is the end of World War II and there is a sense of optimism everywhere. Maya Angelou, still in her teens, has given birth to a son. But the next few years are difficult ones as she tries to find a place in the world for herself and her child. She goes from job to job–and from man to man. She tries to return home–back to Stamps, Arkansas–but discovers that she is no longer part of that world. Then Maya’s life takes a dramatic turn, and she faces new challenges and temptations.

In this second volume of her poignant autobiographical series, Maya Angelou powerfully captures the struggles and triumphs of her passionate life with dignity, wisdom, humor, and humanity..

Now you’ve read about it. I suggest you grab the copy as soon as possible and if you’re already a reader, you sure by now should be aware of Maya’s enormous significance in Global literature.

Enjoy your reads,.. Remember,     images you can share your opinion about the book in the comment section below!

WHY ALL THIS CRAP MATTERS

So word has been getting round. About how healthy one should be, or at least what they ought not to eat and etcetera. But truth be told. All these talks matter. Let’s just admit about one thing at least. That out of a million words said,  one line will be helpful to you.

You are what you eat. What you dress, how you look. Before you even introduce yourself, a little summation about your personality will have been made by the character/ behaviour analyst sitting across. I have been confronted on afew occasions. By a few people at the cafeteria. “Eishh!! Betty, I can see you’re getting all traditional.

istock_000017490436xsmall
The stuff that matter

All these local dishes and greens and stuff” They say.  And well, truth be told. yes I am. All these strange processed foods turn me off. To be honest, I don’t see why people get so excited about oily & fried stuff and mcdonalds and pizza hat and etcetera.

My body just reached a point where it won’t take what it won’t take. And it won’t force. Now this is why you need to think about the title of this article.

images
These processed things

It’s like asking a model why she wears long skirts yet other models do  otherwise, why she goes to church whilst everyone else goes clubbing, or why she sticks to a childhood boy-friend who is not in the limelight like other stars or wanna be’s be.

To make things clear, people get tired. that is why all this matters. Now I want you to stop listening to the noise from without, listen to the small voice from within. The voice you’re trying to suppress. The voice that is telling you things that you know are the right things.

Don’t shut it down. Because If you start paying more attention to that voice, you’ll realize that you don’t have to choose ice-cream over mango juice because all your friends are. That you don’t have to dress skimpy to fit in, that you don’t have to tag along where you don’t belong. Hanie, there is so much in you. Don’t give up on yourself too early.

THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND.

So I was wondering for long why it so happened that some people had the same experience over and over again. Like let’s say retaking a course over and over or staying with an abusive spouse, sticking to friends who bad-mouth you etcetera and etcetera. The list is endless.

It was then that I landed on TD Jakes’s preaching about the power of changing your mind. This is what I learned.

  • You will never be a failure.

I know it might sound a bit of*.  But I guess you understand. Let it not sound in someway, but truth is, a changed person will never be the same again. You will never do the same things you used to do. You’ll find it hilarious that at some point you were so limited, so helpless. You’ll also notice how you tackle challenges with a new wave energy that you never had before. And guess what? You’ll won’t fail at whatever you commit yourself to. It doesn’t mean that you won’t make silly decisions again, but you will always correct yourself and move to the right path.

  • You’ll never be vulnerable or even desperate again.

We’ve all been there. At some point you’ve wanted someone so bad that they’ve started treating you like you don’t matter. But you stick around. Because you’re desperate for their love. Their affection.  A person with a changed mind does not insist on where he doesn’t belong or feel welcome. He builds the right relationships, acknowledges his mistakes, and moves in a morally upright. You won’t settle for less if you are a person with a changed mind.

There is a lot more and more. But meanwhile you can ponder on these or watch video here.

Why Britain’s forgotten slave owners?

BRITAIN’S FORGOTTEN SLAVE OWNERS

PROCUDER & DIRECTOR:  BEN CHRISTON

DAVID OLUSOGA as Writer and Presenter.

#Prompt# Did this documentary challenge any preconceived notions you had about the subject matter of this film? What were they and where did they stem from?

I barely had any notions before watching this documentary. To be honest I know slavery has existed, and it is still arguable that it still exists today, but I had never thought about it in the way that David Olusoga, the writer of this film, presented it.

When I think of slavery, what comes to mind is usually the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, plus of course the slavery in America. I had never really focused on slavery in Britain and how it must have been even though that I know chunks of enslavement had been there. Neither did I know that the extent to which slavery in Britain had been practiced was as large as the revelation that I got when I watched the film.

slaves

I have always known slavery is an evil, that it was horrible, but I had never fully understood its depths. It was the vastness of the archives that shocked me however. The huge number of slave owners around Britain, and how many slaves these owners had.

My team and I did the topic ‘The Trans-Atlantic’ slave trade in my African Philosophical Thought class last year. The experience was great. The lessons enormous. But barely in our research did we come across Britain. Most of the videos and literature we came across was American. So we did not really delve deeper into Britain. Watching this video has however opened my eyes to these realities. Learning that even after the Trans-Atlantic slave trade was abolished, slavery still existed. This gave me insights on themes like Trans-Atlantic slave trade Abolition versus The Abolition of slavery as a whole.

It was also amazing to learn that the slave owners had to be compensated for, but what was even more amusing was the fact that they invested their money in huge national projects, sparking a new wave of development. Which makes me wonder. Were the slave owners/traders inherently aggressive and enterprising? After all, when the slavery was being abolished, they fought. When they were at losing ends, they filed for a compensation and when they got the money, they invested it in even more productive or rewarding activities.

The thirst and drive at which these men ran the country was mesmerizing. They were boisterous, aggressive, and influential. They were powerful. They had an overwhelming thirst for prosperity and wealth. They prospered at everything they did despite the cost. No wonder men like George Hibbert defended slavery as much as they could. It is not surprising that one woman in Jamaica, had to completely devalue her slaves, in order to make it clear to the Royal government that the compensation they were making was not enough whatsoever.

FOUR SIGNS YOU SUCK

There are many reasons as to why you may suck. You may have to consider spending some time alone and see how you live your life. I know. It has never been easy. Sometimes you think you you’re fine yet everyone around you finds you a sucker. Now you need to think twice, how are you behaving and how is your character affecting you and your community? Who are you to your friends? Below are four things that could make you suck without you realizing that you actually do.

  1. You’re a gossipdownload

Now talking has never really been a problem. Especially for me and those I meet. But truth be told, sometimes we are just too excited we do not even realize we are talking a lot. Sometimes we are with people we are comfortable with. Well that’s okay. How about if you’re kwon for your infamous involvement in cheap talk and back-biting nature? If you’re a slanderer and it gets everywhere. You start being tagged as a liar, gossip, and who knows what may come out of it? My dear, better you reduce on your time of gossiping and start doing things that really matter.

2. You’re always complaining images

A person who complains a lot is hard to impress. Once in awhile we want to see you smiling and occupied in whatever it is without complaints. Positive people are nice to stay with. They are just too full of good vibe.

3. You don’t know/ remember anybody’s name

screen-shot-2016-10-22-at-6-31-15-pm
As in, Really??

Have you met that one person who doesn’t remember your name? All people recall her name but she doesn’t call anyone by name. Why? She doesn’t remember. Truth be told, find myself in these shoes on so many occasions. But best effort is trying to call you by name or recite it or relate it to another person or event so I don’t forget. Great strategy.

4.  You receive may favors but never return any.  tumblr_lvv85p6xwu1qh8hjzo1_500

Everyone knows at least one person like that. You know that one person who is always taking, taking, taking, but never returning? Or never giving? Now if you’ve not heard of this, this is the time. A borrower is a slave to the lender. So you should keep this at the back of your mind each time you go borrowing. Your lender becomes your master, you become his slave. It is just like the person who feeds you. Otherwise you would go hungry. But wise people try hard not to borrow. And if they do, they try their best to return/ pay. But there are those who will never pay. Once you lend them something, you will never see it again. Then, my dear borrower, truth be told,  you suck!! Otherwise, return some favors and stop going to people only when you need them.

How to be happy and live long.

We’ve all been there. That time when we are frustrated and we don’t wanna talk to anyone. Well, who knows? Maybe you want to live miserably and die young. But if you are reading this, then sweetheart you are in the right place. Take note. There is no mistake here. The tips below will help you stay happy and live long. It is what I chose to do long ago(Well, not really long but long enough images). That is why I am still young and healthy. And of course leaving long! So here are my tips.

No.1 Know what you want.

There is no way you are going to be happy when you don’t know what you want. Failure to learn what you want would be a free ticket to living miserably. But well, who knows. Not me. Try as much as you can to discover your passion, interests and dislikes, so you wont find yourself at a golf-course when you should be at the swimming pool.

No.2 Stay away from toxic people.

You know those people? The ones you see and your blood boils? The ones who will never meet you without leaving a bad comment? Well, you don’t need to stay around such people. They are real energy drainers I am telling you.friends So tip 2. Let them be and do you. I will warn you though. Most of the negative people in your life are your friends. So be careful the friends you choose. I can testify about that. And sweetheart you don’t need to endure what I endured. Close some doors today.

No.3. Get the right partner.

Now this is very important. You gotta date the right girl or guy if you wanna be happy. Relationships where you fight every day are exhausting. images-1Having a partner who is milking you or taking your efforts for granted is even more painful. Better  be wise and choose the right person. Like Mary and John here.. Right for each otherdownload

No.4. Have someone to lean on.

images-3 We’ve all heard those times of trouble. When we cry yet to one can see our tears. Honey you don’t wanna go there. Trust me I have been there. So here is what you do. Get a shoulder to lean. I suggest the person better be divine though. In other words, know God! It doesn’t matter your religious doctrines. As long as you serve a God. Just stay there with him. Because honey, you ain’t running nowhere I am telling you. The Divine will help. God always does it way better than the humans.

No.5. Do what you love.

images-4  Well, why on earth would you have to do what you don’t like? Who is forcing you? And why do you allow them to? You’re your number one person. So I don’t get it when you say I was forced, or I have to. Well, if there is some benefit for you, you might really have to think hard whether you don’t wanna do it. But once you discover that that is not you, why even pull the strings? Just drop it and leave. Do what you love. You will prosper even more.

Using tech to make a greener Ghana.

So the campaign is on. Advocating for a greener Ghana.  Akyaa and her team come to Ashesi this morning running the ‘Creating Green Citizens: Our responsibility” Campaign.

The National Eco Clubs Tour.

Ashesi students discussing the problems with Ghana’s environment and what they they would like to change about it.

#What is Climate change? What does it mean to Ghana today?

If you one day happen to walk on the streets of Ghana, you will perhaps notice the disheartening yet recurring manners of the citizenry. No offense. But it is hardly likely that you will walk and not meet at least one adult male peeing by the road. Last week I met a woman who stood with her legs apart, doing this act to perfection. (I am still recovering). The gutters are exhausted. The trenches, not to mention those in National Institutions as well, are full of rubbish and decay…

Passionate or dispassionate? Let’s try to make a change.

Other, Stories...

It was raining, for I could hear the huge drops of the rain on them iron-sheets…

I could feel a twinge of pain as I tried to stretch. There is a way in which like a sharp needle, the pain went straight through my back, shook me to the bone marrow, and altered my vision. I was tired yet strong, fresh and nauseated all the same. How could a human experience all these emotions at once?  Although my blanket was thick, never before had I got so much warmth from it.

There was a throbbing pain beneath my chest, that stayed no matter how much I tried to ignore it. Besides, my blanket seemed extremely hairy that particular morning! What shocked me was how energetic I felt the moment I sat up. Where had I got so much energy?  Where had I lost my usual habits to? My habits of turning and yawning before finally gathering some strength to kick myself out of bed?

“Goodness! What has become of me?” I cried in despair. What had I been sleeping with? It was the rigidity of my reflection in the mirror in front of me. The realization that I was just as hairy as a bear, scared the heck out me.  My new blue-green eyes gazed at my new extremely hairy eye-brow… What was I? What had I become? This was not me…

…. this feeling of love…

The universe is a vase.

Where all hearts and souls dwell.  I  am lost in my musings…

This feeling of love. Sits at the bottom of my heart. I can feel it in the pit of my stomach. It goes right through my gut. And holds me tight. I live in bondage. So I am questioning the musings…

When do lovers finally see them lovers? When do lovers finally touch each others’ hands? When do they feel each other’s embrace?

“He is waiting for her . Right at the corner. With a Rose in his hands.”

It is, these musings..

This feeling of love… [i will be waiting for you in the corner with a rose flower]
